Heat Advisory Information

7/17     Excessive Heat Warning Information.

The combination of extreme heat and humidity can lead to dangerously hot conditions. Excessive heat may cause Heat Stress or Heat Stroke. Heat stress is heat-related illness caused by your body’s inability to cool down. It is a risk for anyone. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability and requires emergency treatment (see below to learn more about the symptoms)

  • Protect yourself by taking a few preventive measures:
  • Stay in air conditioning during the hottest hours of the day. If you don’t have air conditioning go to public places such as libraries, shopping malls or cooling stations. Air conditioning is the strongest protection for heat-related illness
  • Wear light, loose fitting clothing
  • DRINK WATER OFTEN, don’t wait until you’re thirsty-avoid alcohol or sugary drinks
  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, work
  • Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and wear sunblock
  • Avoid heavy meals

Please note that the following are at an increased risk for Heat Stroke:

  • Infants and young children
  • Older age > 65
  • People who are overweight
  • Those with Medical conditions and taking certain medications
